The Barnetts’ Story
Barnetts Adopt Six Siblings through Christian City Crossroads Foster Care & Adoption Program
Peter and Jennifer Barnett, parents of four biological children, age 24 to 15, always wanted a big family. Originally from Buffalo, New York, the Barnetts later settled in Georgia. With three of their biological children now adults and living on their own, they looked for a sibling set to adopt.“Our goal was to keep kids together because many adoptive parents don't have the space and/or time to adopt more than one or two children. When we saw pictures of six siblings who were currently separated, we knew they were our family’s missing pieces,” Jennifer said. To inquire about adopting the siblings, the Barnetts contacted Michaela Guthrie, Program Executive at Crossroads Foster Care & Adoption, a relatively new (2018)program of Christian City, a not-for-profit located in Union City, Georgia, that has been serving abused and at-risk children through the Children’s Village Residential Programsince 1965. The Safe Place Runaway & Homeless Youth Program was also added in2014. Over the course of the next18 months, a home study was completed. After many months of arranging weekend visits with the children who were living in four different foster homes several hours away, the adoption was finally completed inFebruary2020.Suddenly the Barnett family grew from six to twelve. The adopted six siblings range in age from 14 to 6–three boys and three girls. The Barnetts’ 15-year-old biological son brings the total children at home to seven! Some describe adoption as a journey of faith, and the Barnettsagree. Jennifer said, “Love heals. Our kids have come such a long way in a short amount of time. Many people say, ‘Thank goodness those kids have you.’ To that, I say, ‘thank goodnessGod's plan let them be a part of our lives.’We are the lucky ones.”
